No dialogs or anything.
dpkg-reconfigure -plow xdm gives:
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: xdm is broken or not fully installed
It does appear that the last upgrade applied has broken other things.
I tried your suggestion to start kdm directly - and it went into a
cyclical X restarting loop. So - that promted me to try a simple
startx - no joy there either :-( I get "No screens found" :-(
Looks like the upgrade broke X this time - but then - that's the
penalty for running unstable (although it's been suprisingly stable
for me for a long time).
I'll dig deeper into getting X started - but if we can get
x-window-system and xdm back in place it'd be great :-)
