 hmmmm.

 you want to forward that story to him about the atari transputer
 workstation thing - or what's his email address, i'll do it.

 that would at least demonstrate to him that it is often the
 _interaction_ between the driver and the x-server that is the
 issue.

 in my case i had to modify the driver, but i was initially
 called in to fix the x-server!
