... why would x version 3 work fine (same kernel),
 and xfree86 v4 not?

(i _do_ understand that interactions between kernel drivers
and x-servers can cause problems when one is upgraded, especially
if there are assumptions made between the two about their
  interaction.

this was exactly the problem that i had with the upgrade
from X11r2 to X11r4 on the Atari Transputer Workstation, 10
years ago: the mouse driver assumed that X11r2 would leave
mouse events in the queue for a while before processing them,
such that a two-button press could be detected and one event
modified into a middle-button event and the other one deleted.

X11r4 changed and took the mouse events out the queue _Immediately_
so this brain-dead middle-button code subsequently never worked.

i had to add in a timer interrupt routine and basically
  Do A Proper Job...)

you are entitled to your doubts, in the same way that
i am entitled to guess as to where the problem might lie
and to inform you and others of those guesses.

i only mention it because there is an outstanding
kernel-related keyboard bug i saw in the lists of "is this
bug already in this list?" thing.

if someone is going to investigate that one in the kernel,
they might wish to investigate this one as well.

 that's all.

 that's the one!

hard drive activity: at the same time, mouse goes mad if you move it.

as i mentioned above, this did not occur under the ATI accelerated
 X server (version 3).

 hope this all helps,

 l.
