X 4.1.0 appearing and then disappearing
Hi :)
The relationship I've always had with X could probably best be described as
"off-off" ... but today I'm trying to make sense of the beast, and not having
much luck....
The scenario: A fresh bare Debian 3.0 install. Nothing installed via tasksel
or dselect. Just "x-window-system-core" and xfs (which *is* running in the
background)
The kernel is from the install CD 2.4.18-bf24.
$ startx
causes the usual delay as things get started up, then the familiar mono
background and X cursor appear. I'm able to wiggle the mouse and the cursor
moves accordingly... then in under a second, it's all gone... back to the
console.
I'm running this under VMWare 3.2 as a possible roll-out to replace Windows +
Office + Outlook with Debian + KDE3, etc. so I wanted a very generic X setup
which will work on all machines...
This is why I chose the generic "vga" driver in 16 colours... Here's the
XFree86.0.log..

dpkg also included a 'Generic Mouse' at /dev/input/mice which doesn't
exist... I removed it from the XF86Config-4 in the hopes that was the problem
- but no joy..
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be very eager to hear them!
The rest of the desktop is working well on another test machine using a
specific VGA driver (nv) but this was just an 'inflatable' test to get a
generic configuration working...
As a final note, I even tried using the 'fbdev' X driver since the
2.4.18-bf24 kernel loads the 'fb16vga' framebuffer driver, but at 'startx' I
just get an error about 'EGA/VGA Planes are not supported yet by drivers'
Oh and absolutely finally - this has all been done running as root :)
