Tom Dickey pointed out that the problem may be that I'm setting the
class names instead of the instance names in the app-defaults file, so
I'll see about changing that.

Ask upstream (xpert@xfree86.org, and ask for private CCs).  Once they've
narrowed it down to which of the above is the problem, file a Debian bug
report.

I agree, but we need to know where the problem is before anything can be
done about it.
