I got the latter two to work by saying the following:

*VT100.Scrollbar.background:          grey
*VT100.Scrollbar.foreground:          black

I'm not sure why the VT100 is necessary; my system has no resource
settings more specific than *Scrollbar that would cause the settings you
specified to be ignored.

So there may be a bug Xrm, Athena, or XTerm here.

Changing the thickness doesn't work at all, probably because its effect
is overriden by the usage of "backgroundPixmap".  Also see Debian Bug
#147753.

Maybe so, but things should still work.
