Pehaps you don't know about rsync's --link-dest option: you can, with rsync, keep generations without duplicating between them. But, as others have said, deduplication at the file system level (or below, as VDO does) is mainly interesting where you have a whole herd of VMs or containers which are constantly being cloned and too few sysadmins. That's where those solutions shine (i.e. dedup across "space", not "time"). Cheers -- t
