I used an ordinary netinstall image, not described as 'minimal'. Xfce
was certainly listed among the desktop environments, and it installed
without problems on a very old laptop.

But all the netinstalls pull most of their software from the Net, as
the name implies. 'Support' for a desktop in a netinstall is no more
than an entry in a text list. Even without that, a console-only
installation can be made and Xfce and supporting graphics can be
installed normally, though not as conveniently.

I will soon be installing unstable starting from a console-only
bullseye, upgrading at that point and only then loading what I want,
including GUI and Xfce.
