So you say you can ping your local lan.   That indicated your networking is working.

are you using dhcp or static ip addresses

what is in /etc/resolv.conf

I know re-installing is not a hideous task, especially at this stage
(nothing to back up, for starters) but it just seems so ... inelegant.
