I have never tried to install Debian with virtualbox.
Bare Metal is obviously very different... perhaps that is the root
of the problems you are having.
I suggest you read about it in the Debian Wiki.
so, let's chalk this one up to user error

Perhaps you have found a bug.
I don't have an optical drive, I use USB, but that should not

using?
