What kind of hardware do you have?

stretch-backports non-free has 390.87-2~bpo9+1 which might help;
if not, you should consider installing a new video card if
that's an option. The cheapest new-in-box video cards are around
$35 US, and will (a) work properly and (b) be noticeably faster

Latest Nvidia driver supporting hardware this old is version 309.08
The only option that could help is to install Nvidia legacy driver version 304xx (meta package is "nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver").
Any driver version higher than that won't work or recognize the hardware.
