IMO there should be always the actual and released stable kernel for

Is there any reason, why there is installed an old kernel (with probably
security holes or unpatched things)? Just a question.....

Of course, you can say, get the firmware and put it on an usb-stick,

Hello (and hello list! I'm new here :) ),
About the "old kernel", aren't those patched by the Debian Security
team? AFAIK they are fairly secure and with not outstanding bugs.
For newer laptops I would recommend trying the testing alpha installers
which usually have newer kernels.
regarding the firmware part, isn't that firmware on the "unnofficial"
builds that include non-free firmwares?
I just came back to debian recently and found these images through
googling debian+firmware , still visibility on the main page could be
Hope that helps.
