  also, perhaps malware is a possibility?  once you said
chrome and other backport repositories i'm not sure i'd 
trust stuff coming from those as easily as from the main
archives as they may be high enough profile targets and 
worth someone's time to attack...

  i try to be careful about such things and it's helped
me avoid some common hack attempts.
