But also note that using ls -l gives a completely wrong answer.

wooledg:~$ mkdir /tmp/x && cd "$_"
wooledg:/tmp/x$ touch $'this\nis\none\nfile'
wooledg:/tmp/x$ ls -l | wc -l
5
