Hmm. The bad log has

The other thing I noticed when comparing the logs is that the initial
USB-related messages are different, like the devices are being
recognized in a different order. I don't know if that's significant or
not.

I'm afraid I didn't record the exact messages that I got during my
original attempts to install.
With the live image failures that I'm getting now, the console messages
are
