** Creating an /etc/asound.conf (to define a default sound card) and
rebooting made the machine hang for such an extended period during the
boot sequence that I ctrl alt del into recovery mode and deleted the
newly created file. Upon rebooting once more things had returned to
normal again--unless I'm nuts. (Maybe this has nothing to do with
sequencing.)
