Of course, another major problem with it, AFAICT, is that there's no
Free Software client for it.

For Android, there's Serval Mesh, available on Google Play and f-droid.org.  But depends on actually coming across a wifi hotspot with other serval users connected at the same time you are to pass messages store-and-forward style...
