Using the default xterm might work, if on wanted to use a stereo set of
jewelers loupes to read it. I have extra strong trifocals because I had
them scaled to be able to see the cracks around a cold soldered joint as
I am a C.E.T., but I've got to tip my head back to bring the bottom
section, and lean forward to get down to about 7" from the screen to
read it. With a circuit board I can bring it to me, but a whole dell
S2340M monitor would need 2 hands to pick it up, and thats the same two
hands I need to type with, and while there have been times that 4 arms
and hands would have been very handy, I never figured out how to grow
them.
Tain't gonna happen, so make aptitude run on a terminal I can configure
and use. ncurses is what, 35-45 years old, is it not time it was put
out to pasture, and its graphics the old ibm EGA days put out of our
hair?
The same can be said of mc, and I thought for about 10 minutes that
krusader might replace it, but it wasn't capable of doing more than 5%
of what mc can do, and mc is quick to quit & restart to get back to a
usable screen when it upchucks all over itself. krusader's eye candy
was nice but when you looked in the menus it wasn't blessed with any of
the stuff mc can do. I removed it.
So, my dear lady, how do I change the default env TERM=xterm to a real,
useable terminal, because xterm is a waste of hd space, incapable of
answering the call when you need a terminal. It may have been usable on
a 480x640 screen 30 years ago, but on today's $140 monitors its
worthless.
FWIW. there is a 3rd choice in the system menu, called UXTerm. Looks
identical to xterm, totally non-configurable like xterm. So thats more
wasted hd space to me.
Konsole can also be made usable I believe. The std "schema" needs a few
changes to its current defaults but it can be made quite usable, so its
a possible alternative.
Regards Lisi.
