Yes. I'd recommend that too. Dist-upgrades work pretty well in Debian.
Backup is still a good idea (upgrade or not :-)
Unless you feel that you have accumulated too much crud by tweaking and
hot-fixing things in perhaps not-so-canonical ways and want to get rid
of all that in one fell swoop, that is.
