Create a file in ~/.screenlayout with the proper resolution you want.
Then add it to autostart. Here is an example, which is the way mine
worked to use two monitors:
Added to autostart:
~/.screenlayout/ext-acer-dual-monitor.sh
The ext-acer-dual-monitor.sh contains:
#!/bin/sh
xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1600x900 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal
--output VGA1 --mode 1440x900 --pos 1904x0 --rotate normal
