If you want to read/write file as your normal user, just make sure that the UID is the same on both systems. You might want to edit /etc/passwd on one of the boxes for that, and then you can use "find" to "chown" any files that are owned by the old UID. You shouldn't need to do anything other than that. There are other ways to do this, but that is the way I do it at home so I don't need to mess with UID mapping. Or _is_ the UID on both client and server already identical?
