Running 'locate' on the USB stick on i72720qm, there are *.ko files for all of the above except:

    hid_generic
    pci_stub
    vbox*

The VirtualBox modules are not the problem, as Ethernet worked on i72600s before VirtualBox was installed.

Searching Debian "packages that contain files whose names contain the keyword", "hid_generic" does not exist:

    http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages#search_contents

https://packages.debian.org/search?searchon=contents&keywords=hid_generic&mode=filename&suite=stable&arch=any

Same for "pci_stub":

https://packages.debian.org/search?searchon=contents&keywords=pci_stub&mode=filename&suite=stable&arch=any

Perhaps the Ethernet problem using the USB stick on i72720qm is not due to missing kernel modules (?).

Maybe I need to compare lists of installed packages (?).
