yep, typically when your machine goes super slow due to memory you can
always drop to a tty ps and kill the process which will bring your
machine back to life.

A good idea is to have some memory limits, if the kernel thinks it's
out of memory it can start killing stuff, when this happens you
generally need a reboot.
