I believe this is a matter of configuration in order to make things work
well with each other. At
https://wiki.freedesktop.org/www/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/User/PerfectSetup/#alsaapplications
there is a snippet which instructs ALSA to output to PulseAudio. Yes,
PulseAudio does then output back to ALSA, but it means that any
application which outputs to the default ALSA device will get routed
through PulseAudio and mixed in as you'd expect.
