What do you mean by "password for the ssh key"? If you mean you set a
*passphrase*, I don't think you want one.
Also, have you allowed yourself to login as root (to make the initial
key transfer)?

"Not working" is no help. If you use
$ ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub <username>@<remotehost>
what does it say, and does any file in .ssh/ get modified at
remotehost?
