Here's a complete shot in the dark. It worked for me on a display issue
today (lightdm, visible cursor, blank everything else).
Is this jessie? Is consolekit installed? If ~$ aptitude why consolekit
suggests it's redundant to libpam-systemd, remove it, then:
# service gdm3 start
