Using the BIOS to emulate Native Mode IDE is making the machine behave
better.
What was the previous mode ? AHCI, RAID ?

I at least reached a
grub>
prompt. So, I think it found the disk. Finally. :)

How is that better than before ? What does 'ls' print ?

Solved.

For posterity, HP DC5850 did not take the Debian 7.8.0 installation on the first try. The installation would proceed smoothly, but when it came time to boot into the new OS, an error would occur from grub:
error: no such disk

The solution for me with my single 80 GB 3.0 GB/S SATA drive was to go into the BIOS (F10), go to the storage menu, and select storage options. For the listed hard drive, change the setting from RAID to Native IDE. After that, the machine will boot normally.

Thank you everybody for all your time and advice. I do appreciate it.

Chris
