Re: Jessie: suddenly unable to make any changes with apt-get or aptitude:

Hi Michael. You got that right, exactly. I had followed some instructions from a blog post to install Oracle database on the system, but it was long, incomplete instructions, requiring a fair amount of mucking around in the system for me to try to get it right. I didn't quite get it running yet. What threw me off was the way this took a few months to cause problems to arise in package management.

dpkg and apt-get are working again!

Exactly.

For sure, an it took a lot of fiddling to try to get Debian to look a little more like Red Hat in order for the installation scripts to have a chance. I followed some instructions from a blog post, but hadn't remembered editing a few lines in sysctl.conf or whatever it's called until I opened the file and saw my comments near where dba_group_gid was mentioned. Luckily I commented those lines, so I was pretty confident I could comment them out at least until the next time I attempt to get Oracle installed again.

what threw me off the trail was that this didn't cause problems with Debian updates until a couple months after I added this line. Maybe some change in sysctl or procps or systemd (whatever those are).

Thanks for the input! --dean
