But the installed Skype 2.2.0.35 had worked quite happily on this 64
bit system, until Microsoft terminated the access to Skype Central (or
whatever it is named).

Synaptic (I do not know how else to find the information) shows
gtk-engines version number to be 1:2.20.1-1.

Synaptic also shows as installed, ia32-libs-gtk with version number 20140911.
