Network devices "go bad" a lot in Wheezy

:-)

Yeah, you read the subject right. Let me explain...

Debian (Wheezy 7.5) is the first distro I've seen where this happens.
You reboot, and eth0 doesn't work and neither does lo. It's
intermittent enough I can't give you an exact reproduction sequence.

Sometimes its one, sometimes it's the other, sometimes it's both.

Especially when lo goes bad (whatever that turns out to mean), you get
really strange symptoms happening. I think it messed up my sound, which
I wrongly fixed by uninstalling Pulseaudio. Lack of a functional lo
ruins my Dovecot IMAP's connectivity. It does a lot of other bad stuff
that doesn't scream "Your lo is bad!".

Anyway, I do the following as root:

ifdown lo
ifup lo

And then the weird symptoms go away. Sometimes I need to do this for
eth0 too.

So, if you start having weird stuff happen, just for fun, ifdown and
ifup lo, and see if it changes anything.
