In my case, it's generally because the ethernet cable has slipped out
of its socket.

It may happen more often just before my yearly spring cleaning of the
inside of the box (vacuuming, re-seating, etc.).

I haven't tried that, but I've found I've sometimes had to bring eth0
down and back up, even after plugging the ethernet cable back in.

Next time, I'll have to try to remember to try lo first.
