Sure :) If the wifi wasn't activated automatically my best guess is that
there is still software missing to activate it (most probably firmware).
Could you please open a terminal and run:
dmesg | grep firmware
If you're "lucky" you should see a message complaining about missing
firmware and the exact file name. Use that filename to search in your
package manager (e.g. Synaptic) or on http://packages.debian.org for the
correct package and install it. If you don't have internet access on the
laptop download it from the site above and install it by running as root
dpkg -i firmware-blah_blah.deb
and restart your computer.
If you get stuck at any point feel free to ask again, but please do
provide full copy paste of the commands you tried and the results.
