If you want it to be "snappy" you may want to avoid heavy Desktop 
Environments (like Gnome or KDE). Debian also offers XFCE and LXDE.

Other than that your system should be able to deal with any recent 
distro. In order to decide I would advise you try Live CDs.

The format itself (.deb and .rpm) is not very interesting to end users. 
But APT (and friends) on the other hand is for many an important reason 
to stick to Debian (and related distros).
