A good night's sleep yielded "obvious" general solution - format the partition appropriately , i.e. FAT32 in *this* instance ;)

Hint to some 'purists' - Why have groups/users/etc when only one person has physical access, there is no possibility of network access (internet or other), and the machine in question (being designated experimentation) has no data of value on it? <chuckle>
