I've had problems with text being invisible in gnome-terminal.  To
resolve it I did:

Edit
Profiles
highlight the profile and hit "Edit" button
Color tab
uncheck "Use colors from system theme"

I don't know if this will help your Mutt problem, but it's quick and
easy to test.

If you use the Fluxbox window manager, every window can be tabbed by
middle-click dragging the titlebar into the titlebar of another window.
