You could perhaps increase the quality of suggestions by (if you are
able) being more specific about what you want to achieve with the
printer (volume, color, portability etc).

I have used openprinting a lot. I find it very useful.

We've had very good success with second hand Lexmark t522 b/w laser,
however they are getting a little long in the tooth now. Awesomely low
per-page ink cost.
The only trick might have been extracting the .PPD file from the
windows driver. For postscript printers, it's pretty much a guarantee
you can get it to work by locating the PPD.

Had a bit rougher experience with second hand Ricoh c420 printers;
every about 30 pages, it goes through a 1.5minute "calibration". Ink
costs are fine, and it's a color laser.
