Squeeze i386 has an amd64 kernel. The command

apt-cache search linux-image

will show you all the possible kernels. Choose some -amd64, for example:

apt-get install linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64

Then you will have a 64bit kernel and 32bit userspace, there is nothing
wrong with this.
