And it helped indeed. To match Ubuntu installation I've install the 
following packages, which were not installed in Sqeeze:

nautilus-actions
nautilus-dbg
intltool and intltool-debian
libgnomevfs2-bin
libgnomevfs2-0-dbg

I do not care if some of them have nothing to do with the problem, but 
after installing them Nautilus behaves as expected, i.e. the correct 
timestamps are preserved after copying.

Thanks for the suggestion. This was exactly the solution I was looking 
for. 

The suggested use of nautilus-rename-exif-date script would be rather a 
workaround instead. Plus I needed to preserve original file names and it 
would change them.
