Re: Problem with Nvidia kernel module
Hi list,
I recently upgraded my system, and its kernel (3.2.0-4-amd64).
Because of bug #696150, I need to be able to boot with kernel
2.6.32-3-amd64. During the upgrade, gcc-4.3 was removed, and the nvidia
packages (nvidia-glx, nvidia-settings, etc.) were upgraded to version
304.48-1. The problem I am now facing is that I cannot compile that
version of the nvidia kernel module for the 2.6.32-3-amd64 kernel,
because it should be compiled with gcc-4.3, which is not installable
anymore. Is there a workaround to this problem, except of course
downgrading the whole system?

I wrote that gcc-4.3 is not installable anymore, not to mean that I could
not find a .deb file, but to mean that it breaks a number of dependencies,
which seem difficult to handle except by downgrading a significant number
of other packages:
$ sudo apt-get install gcc-4.3

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gcc-4.3 : Depends: binutils (>= 2.19.1) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libgomp1 (>= 4.3.5-4) but it is not going to be installed
gvfs : Depends: gvfs-daemons (>= 1.12.3-1) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gvfs-daemons (< 1.12.3-1.1~) but it is not going to be installed
libgcc1 : Breaks: gcc-4.3 (< 4.3.6-1) but 4.3.5-4 is to be installed
libstdc++6 : Breaks: gcc-4.3 (< 4.3.6-1) but 4.3.5-4 is to be installed
