I'm not very familiar with Synaptic, but I assume it is not much different than aptitude. In this case - manual: packages installed by you and most of the packages installed during system installation - automatic: packages "pulled-in" by other packages. aptitude removes these automatically as soon as no other package depends on them[1], apt-get has a dedicated comand - local & obsolete: installed packaged that do not exist in your configured repositories.
