I can't tell (because I don't know) if the init strings can be customized
by the user in NM. I have only used with success wvdial for setting up
HSDPA connections and that's what I always use. Sorry if this does not
help you at all, but that's the experience I've had with NM in this
field :-/
It seems that NM mobile broadband settings are well embedded into NM code
and by selecting your carrier from the wizard all the configurations
(init strings, dial plans, etc...) are automagically applied.
