Have a look at the headers for one of your messages when it finally gets
through. Look for the various "Received:" headers; these will tell you
which servers your message went through and when. Be careful that some
of them may be in different time zones, so you probably want to convert
them all into, say, UTC. Look then for a large gap between hops. That
will be your problem.

As to why the message got held up, it may be any of a number of reasons:
Virus/spam checking, the server was temporarily offline, etc etc. The
nature of e-mail is that it may get hung up somewhere - most times it
goes straight through - but there's no guarantees.
