It could be that your machine is booting too fast and doesn't have time for an external USB disk to settle. Later when you look at it time has passed and then it is okay. You didn't say and so I can only guess that is your problem. I have never had any issues with external eSATA disks in enclosures *without* additional electronics. I don't know how to best handle the problem. I have not had to deal with such a problem yet. Your solution doesn't seem terrible to me. But putting a sleep in the early part of the boot process may enable the standard scripts to work okay. Bob
