Maybe that's another problem you should investigate further (I would 
start by looking at Xorg logs) but the driver version does support you 
card, there is no need to keep the legacy branch nor older drivers :-)

Nope, that cannot be possible. Can you point me to some oficial document? 
I'm interested in this because I also have a 7600GS card and wouldn't  
like to have any problem in the upcoming wheezy.
