Thanks for pointing me at /var/log/Xorg.0.log. There wasn't an (EE) line,
so I broadened the search (non-relevant lines removed):
walterh@saturn:~$ egrep 'EE|WW' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa
(WW) Falling back to old probe method for fbdev
(WW) RADEON(0): Color tiling is not yet supported on R600/R700
(WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled
walterh@saturn:~$
Sorry it's long, but the whole of (what I believe is the relevant section
of) /var/log/Xorg.0.log reads:

I suspected that the problem was the kernel modesetting, but when I tried
with the nomodeset parameter it didn't seem to make a difference.
Does this get nearer to identifying the issue?
Thanks again.
