An ATA is sensible way to go. One with an FXO gives you best of both
worlds. A phone handset is a familiar and usable instrument. What could
be easier than punching a number in or picking up to answer a call. Why
be tied to a computer (which most people have closed down for the best
part of a day, making them inaccessible)) with a head set on? That's
call-centre technology.
ATAs may be standards compliant but they are not exactly open. Given
that, they can be far more convenient to use in a static situation.
