My system (lenny 2.6.26-2-686, P2, 2+ GHz) will just stop.

That's a quite old computer.

No disk light, nothing works. No scrolling, typing, marking/selecting,
no copying/pasting. Just frozen. It will stay like this for probably 5
secs. although it seems longer, and it happens often, every couple of
minutes.

And after the freeze it becomes responsive again?

It will also run really slow. Steady disk light and although I can
switch (slowly) between workspaces, nothing else can be done.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned, or asked. What is your swap usage? No disk light blinking certainly does not seem like swap, but the general slowness and unresponsiveness does. When my swap fills (usually due to my daughter leaving pages up in Firefox running Flash games) the system will hang, or run VERY slowly. The mouse jumps around and windows do not refresh. Usually, I can switch to a console and run free, where I find my swap is completely used up. When this happens the best thing that I can do is kill stuff until there is enough free memory and swap available to turn swap off to completely clear it, then turn it back on again.

Then I complain to my daughter about flash games, and to my wife about keeping 20+ tabs open in Firefox. This, of course, does no good.
