you probably have a problem with your video driver.

linux and laptops often don't go together very well IME.

you'll need to find out what your video chipset is.  you might even
want to visit the HP website, it's possibl, although unlikely that they
have a support page for linux on that model.

try the lspci command to get the name of the graphics chipset.  you
can use that information to figure out what the kernel
module is.

the other thing to try is to bring the graphics up using a standard
non-accelerated x driver.

all of this is fairly low-level, technical and painful, just so you
know...
