The above error is no indication for that, because you want the package
"build-essential", without a trailing 's'.

There is no entry for "http://ftp.us.debian.org lenny/updates/contrib"
here, so I have no clue why aptitude throws these errors.  Note that the
IP for ftp.us.debian.org is subject to change due to DNS round robin.

My crystal ball tells me that the filesystem where you ran this is
mounted with the "noexec" option.  Fix this and retry.
