I have just discovered from another list that the problem is indeed the
card reader. What is needed is one of the new, improved 66-in-1 (Yes
66, I kid you not.) card readers. For example, the standard Vantec
Culoré 66-in-1 Multi-Card Reader is advertised in Canada at CA$7.88.
The deluxe model, which includes three USB hubs in addition, is CA$9.88,
both prices exclusive of local sales taxes, in Ontario 13%. In
addition, to quote the manufacturer's web site, "The cleverly designed
USB strap fashionably complements the lavishly embellished card reader
available in colors of Pink, Blue or Green." Imagine that: THREE
decorator colours!
